DJ versus Live Music

How to Decide Between the Two?
Music can be an important part of any event.  In fact, if you employ a great musician or DJ, it will likely be the highlight of the event, as people will always recall how much they enjoyed the entertainment.  Deciding between a live band and a DJ is really a very personal choice, but here are a few things to take into consideration when making up your mind.

More or Less Variety
DJs will have a playlist with thousands of songs, so you can be sure there’s going to be something for everyone’s tastes! DJs will also allow you to have lots of input into what songs you want to hear – and what songs you don’t – so they get a clear idea of the style of music to be played at the event.

Professional live bands will have an extensive repertoire of songs that they continually update, so for the most part, they will have all the current favorites! Live bands won’t offer you as much input into their set list, however, they are happy for you to view their repertoire and highlight any songs you really love so they can make sure they play it.

Be sure to book an entertainer who has experience working conferences, corporate galas, and office parties and not just weddings!

The Cost
For most people, there is a lot hinging on the budget, so if you have decided that you must get a lot for a little when it comes to entertainment, you may have to be satisfied with a DJ.  Even if you had your heart set on a live band, you have to consider the added price that comes with more people to pay.  Price your options, but in most cases, a DJ will always win when it comes to the financial bottom line.

Space
It’s important that you ask the DJ or band how much space they require for set up.  Some DJs have a lot of speakers and some of those can be very large.  Similarly bands with numerous players can require a great deal of space.  Make certain that you consider whether or not the selection is wise, given the reserved venue.

Timeframe
DJs will generally be able to play music for a minimum of 5 hours with little to no breaks, while the standard performance time for most live entertainers will be 4-5 hours including breaks, depending on the act. Set up time is also a key consideration.

Bottom Line
Ultimately, the decision might just come down to the vibe that you are trying to achieve.  While the DJ is less expensive and provides a wide variety of music, if you are going for a very sophisticated feel, you simply can’t beat a live band!

What's your preference when it comes to entertainment?
